Golden State

Fresno to Red Rock Canyon

Homeless men scavenge through the contents of an abandoned storage locker.

A man stands over his dead dog beside the highway.

A girl with a pink parasol dances in her dusty yard

Hand-painted Bible verses by the side of the road

Windmills on the hills

Solar panels like a black lake on the valley floor

A yard filled with balloons

We drink tequila and watch boys climb over red cliffs against the setting sun as they sing out snippets from “The Lion King”

Night falls. Stars spangle the desert sky as mesquite smoke scents the air, campfires warming the canyon walls

A world of pathos and possibility.
